Latest from the Blog: The Five Greatest Mechanics/Engineers in Sci-Fi
5. Commander Charles Tucker III (Trip)
A gifted Chief Engineer of the very first Enterprise, Trip served aboard the NX-01 for ten years under the command of his best friend Captain Jonathan Archer. He is a bright, charming man from Panama City, Florida who taught himself engineering by working on boat engines in his youth. He was also a troublemaker, with Archer in Starfleet Academy. His childlike disposition was warmly welcomed by his crew-mates and regularly he held classic movie nights for the crew, complete with popcorn.
Of all the crew members of Enterprise, he had the worst luck - being impregnated by an alien species, being paralyzed and comatose after an accident, stranded on an alien planet, convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, loses his sister during an attack against Earth and later giving his life to save his friends aboard Enterprise.
When he was paralyzed, Dr. Phlox cloned him to use the clone as spare parts. The Trip clone grows from infancy to adulthood quickly and gives his life to save the man from which he was made. It would seem that his good nature even transcended the nurture vs. nature argument as the Trip clone shares his nobility.
He has a moral compass that points to truest north. In the episode “Cogenitor,” he befriends a life form whose only purpose is to be a third gender in the procreation process of an alien race. These people are treated as lower class and denied simple things like rights, education, even a name. Trip takes this person under his wing and educates him, gives him an identity. He chooses the name Charles to honor and thank Trip for exposing him to what his life should be like. Though it causes quite the uproar, it just goes to show the type of man he is.
